For some reason, this article is really cracking me up (you won't be able to read it a day from now, I'll get excerpts later). But suffice to say, this one quote says it all:

I'm not the kind of person to ordinarily hold anything against anyone. But it does get a little tiresome when the same select person (or should I say people?) gains perverse pleasure in, well, going through your stuff - in more ways than one - when you're away.

Though I guess leaving my computer switched on and not locked when I left the country, and not doing something about certain highly incriminating video files (yes, those) was probably the biggest mistake on my part. Especially when you know that there WILL be attempts by said person/people to get his/their jollies off.

At some point, what with all the constant attempts (both successful and otherwise) to invade your privacy in more ways than one (omg he has a webcam! and it's running! and there's someone at the other end!), you wonder when to say "guys, that's just not cool".

Because it's getting fucking annoying now.

- Interviewed with Microsoft. Probably a freak accident seeing as how they don't accept international students for their Finance internships. I decided to interview anyway, why turn down an opportunity?

- Applied to, got an interview for, and interviewed with the FAP. I really don't know what my chances are. Everyone I know in the program right now is a BHP overachiever.

- Skipped an LEB test. Now my hopes for yet another 4.0 basically rest on a single final. In other words, so much for that perfect GPA. :(

Using a cellphone while driving is hazardous to your personal well being. Not because it might distract you from actually driving (it might), but because it WILL distract your attention from the road enough for you to miss the cop car on the side shooting radar. And cause you to be ticketed.

I always thought my first speeding ticket would have been more like, caught at something to the tune of 200 km/h by a speed camera in Dubai trying to go too fast for the radar to even register, and not being successful. At least that would have been the fun way to go down.

I end up being pulled over by a damn state trooper with his car stopped on the SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY. I should have seen that thing from a mile away - and I usually do too. If it wasn't for the damn cellphone.

Stupid, stupid, stupid. I'll never again use a cellphone while driving.

(In case you're wondering, 88 mph in a 65 zone. 2 mph more and I wouldn't be able to get this off my record through defensive driving. Blah.)

It's been a fairly interesting start to the semester I'd say. For the first time in all my semesters at UT, I seem to know people in each and every one of my classes. What's more, it's a pretty good number of people.

I'm also a peer career mentor for a BA 101 class this semester. Here's to conducting mock interviews with first time business students. Also joined the University Finance Association last week. This one should last a little bit, and be pretty interesting and fun too, unlike my first semester flirtation with the ICA.

On another unrelated note, I've gone ahead and spent my hard earned - and unearned - money on the following so far:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+
Corsair Nautilus 500 Watercooling kit

Already thinking about swapping out my 7800 GTX for something else. Seems like a decent time to sell it considering it's selling for a good amount more than it's worth on eBay.

Well, to start with, I plan on buying multiple packs of $30 pills to take abroad with me to the UK and India, since obviously I have no use for them here. I also plan on getting through customs without having them confiscated because you know... not being a woman, and not having a prescription, I'm not eligible to purchase them.

That's actually only because I have yet to learn about the existence of other, cheaper, and more effective kinds of birth control with fewer side effects, since obviously, that's the reason I made the side note that I did, didn't I? ;)

A tendency for gossip, a wilder than average imagination, a hint of perversion, and excessive testosterone can be a dangerously potent combination.

On a different, and yet not totally unrelated note, my Intermediate Accounting professor was replaced at the last minute. Whatever you do, do not take Sunny Yang for ACC 326. I barely made it through the first two minutes. 12 credits, here I come!

Class listing so far: FIN 357, MIS 304 (this class is hilarious), MIS 325, LEB 323 (evil) and ACC 326 (obviously not for very long). 353 too but that doesn't count.

And I'm out of here, ending what's quite possibly been the laziest summer vacation ever taken.

Not that I've really accomplished much this week. I did add a new (admittedly serious) scratch on the fender of my dad's Lexus. What the hell, we were planning to sell it anyway. I probably neglected to mention that I had scratched it once already the first week of work - but that wasn't my fault. Blame Emirates Towers for not having adequate parking (seemingly a terminal problem in Dubai) which leaves people no option but to double park... and scratch my car in the process.

In other car related news, Pace, my brother, and I went karting. Incredibly fun (and expensive). And the other day I drove Pace's old 1988 BMW 3-series. I've said it before and I'll say it again, it's probably the only time I've ever had a car completely floored, and still been overtaken and flashed at for going too slow. Quite the experience, as I'm sure he'll attest to.

On the other hand, driving his 530 was an entirely different experience. Don't get me wrong, while I do get a huge kick out of driving old cars with broken power steering systems and zero torque in lower gears, there is something to be said for the 530. All those flashing lights... you feel like you're driving a damn jet. Might as well take off with the kind of acceleration you get when the thing's floored. Give me the money and I'll buy one.

Well actually no, I'd use it as down payment on a Cayman S. That would be the 2006 Porsche Cayman S. And I had the chance to test drive one today. Let's just say that this baby would easily leave the 530 in the dust (sorry Pace). In fairness, it would do the same to my Accord and well, just about every other car I've had the chance to drive so far. Now I just need to convince my dad to buy the thing.

On top of the December to-do list: Test drive a Ferrari.

Apparently, not so much. In fact, all you have to do is give a crap, and your seemingly insoluble friendship will dissolve like a tiny crystal of common salt in some really hot water. Which is pretty much what this whole thing is. Do be careful though, because if you go a little beyond giving a crap and actually begin caring, you just might be accused of pulling a "Sam and Abhuday" and being blamed for... well... not caring. Strange world huh?

Now excuse me for giving a crap. But I think I'm going to be a bit plebian here and actually say (God no!) that I in fact do care about my friends. I do care when two of my friends have unresolved issues that directly or indirectly may or may not affect me. I do care when one of those friends decides to make the proverbial world his battlefield. And I do care when said friend doesn't care.

So sue me for trying to fix things.

For a good laugh, and if you work at an accounting firm - preferably a big four, go to the office in a tennis shirt and gym shorts.

The was probably the highlight of the day on Saturday, also my last day at work. Well, besides the squash games and the thoroughly filling all-you-can-eat of course. Yesterday wasn't too bad either. Watched the French Grand Prix with none other than teh schumy (who has apparently killed his blog).

There was one other thing....

I found out last night that I had a pretty bad case of Reye's Syndrome as a kid. Specifically when I was 6. All I remember is that was hospitalized, and all this while I've thought it was jaundice. But apparently it was a lot worse, and let's just say I got off easy. It could potentially have been worse... much worse. Not to go philosophical all of a sudden or anything, but it does put a lot of things in perspective. I'm glad I got lucky. A lot of other people don't.

That is all.

The internship ends this week. Me, I got what I wanted out of it - 6 weeks of work experience, the resume line, some spare change, and the internship credit of course. KPMG is great but I don't think I'm coming back here next year. Maybe in corporate finance.

And it's now two weeks until I go to Bombay (again). Really looking forward to this... with any luck I'll be able to meet everyone I want and do everything I've got planned (two months without Super Smash Bros. Melee is two months too many).

Highlight of the evening: Watching some guy doing 72 get flashed by a speed camera on Beach Road. 72? I'm sure as hell not driving there if I can avoid it.

Done making predictions. I went 7 for 8 in the round of 8 and it's been a downhill slide ever since. Either way, all 3 teams I supported are out. Argentina, Brazil, and now Germany. Oh well.

What do you make of it when someone tells you that you look like you're 18, and about ten minutes later she tells you that you sound like someone much older than your age? (20 in my case)

Spent the last hour or so messing around with my blog template. After going from bad to worse to indescribably horrendous, I've decided that I'm better off leaving it for when I'm not sleep deprived and having to wake up for work at 7 am. For the moment I'm going to stick with what I've got now. Maybe until the weekend, I don't know.

Don't expect any insights from me on the World Cup. I'm not exactly a rabid fan. Though I wouldn't mind seeing Brazil win again, just to watch Pace squirm.

F1 is just about the only sport I give a crap about now. It would help if Ferrari and Bridgestone got their act together. Watching Renault outclass the field - and Alonso having a perfect reliability record especially compared to his teammate - is a bit painful.

Yeah, this was an incredibly in-depth and insightful post, but it's past 4 am and I can't sleep. I do have something more substantial in the works actually. Soon as I finish up some framing. Though I get the feeling that just about anyone who's even remotely into that stuff doesn't read my blog anymore. Not that it matters. I didn't create this blog to appeal to readers. Hell, I didn't even expect readership (and it's not like I have much anyway).

This is the part I least like about visiting home. The mother dearest's usual discussion on my pseudo-independence. Something to do with maintaining my autonomy while complying with family values, honor and tradition.

Yeah.

I guess it figures considering she puts so much emphasis on the extended family, and really is like, communication central when it comes to relatives. Spends at least an hour on the phone everyday talking to family, be it in India, America, Europe, Pakistan, whatever. Family is important to her, and she's the kind of person who would really go to the ends of the earth if she felt like she had to for the family.

I don't know what I've done that constantly prompts these everytime I'm here. The only thing I have to say is that while I do respect my family just as much as anyone else, I would expect them to accept me for who I am and who I choose to be. Even if it means that they have to accept someone who doesn't necessarily comform to their norms of conduct, and well, existence. It may not be the case now but I can think it any number of potential scenarios where it might be.

A little perspective might help now and then.

And very much kicking. With all the lead up to the finals, the finals themselves, the presentation, packing my stuff up, driving to Houston, flying home and getting over the jetlag, I never really got the time to post anything on here.

I'm not quite sure where to begin, except to say that this has probably been my best semester yet. Probably the hardest one too. Probably? Most definitely would be more like it.

I did get just about no sleep on my flight back. And I got intimately acquainted with my copies of USA Today, Financial Times and the Wall Street Journal.

Blah, I'm just feeling too lazy to write anything more. I'll just kill time by beating my cousins at Tony Hawk.

Side note: I watched the West Wing finale last night. Suffice to say that it ended the best way it possibly could. I know I'll miss it.

It never ceases to amaze me how much some people can write about exactly nothing. Ad nauseum.

But enough with the vague references. I was watching Real Time with Bill Maher earlier today. If you get HBO you should too - this guy is probably way more credible than anyone at CNN, Fox or MSNBC. Well, maybe except Olbermann, but I digress. His panel included Zinni, a random feminazi type woman and yet another random guy, and they were all spouting the usual crap people do when you bring up politics anything. Well, except Zinni, he's someone I do respect to some extent. The interesting bit came when Maher asked a question that went something like, and I'm only paraphrasing from memory: Do you think China will overtake the US as the world's #1 superpower? And it was amazing how nobody answered the question, and instead chose to go on about why it's a good thing that the US is in fact the world's #1 superpower.

Just an observation.

It's also interesting how, living on this side of the Atlantic, it's so easy to be mentally isolated from the going-ons of the rest of the world. The media, mainstream or otherwise, automatically sets your political frame of reference to a point where you begin to dismiss ideas or issues not considered to be in the mainstream. The entire perspective with regard to, well - everything, is incredibly self-centered.

I need to get out more. And I mean out of the country.

They were playing at the opening of the Blanton Museum earlier today. Well, yesterday really. They seemed to sound really good, had a britpop-coldplay-ish feel to it. General mayhem, randomness and chaos:

The LeaderShape party was pretty fun... and interesting. I was dragged onto the dance floor by Lauren, and promptly assaulted by Dan. (Different Dan, not the one I've mentioned on here a few times before)

Slept a good 12 hours again.

I know I've always hated hypocrites, but not this much.

I just realized, I've been out of the whole computers/hardware/software/gaming/whatever else loop for a while now. The me of two years ago would be truly disappointed in the me of today. I should get back into it.

This country is officially going to hell in a handbasket. I always knew Scalia was right wing to the core, but not batshit crazy. That coupled with the fact that Bush has pretty much decided to ignore law at whim....

I really, really despise hypocrites.

My car owns.

No really, it's better than yours.

I hate closed minded morons almost as much as I hate hypocrites.

I actually got back from LeaderShape yesterday (and it was quite the experience, more on that later), but I drove to Dallas for the night to see Anish.

LeaderShape... I don't know where to start. Or rather, I don't know what to say. I'm having a really hard time quantifying the experience. Suffice to say though, that it wasn't what I expected.

I really don't know how to describe exactly what it was we did, because if I did it would trivialize it. What I can say is that it was definitely worth the time, and more. This wasn't a seminar on 'how to be a leader' or anything of the sort - which was kind of the impression I got when I first heard of it. It was an experience that brought out the best, and sometimes the worst in people. I learned so much about myself, people around me, and how what I do affects those people. And who would have thought anyone could possibly get so close to each other in the span of 6 days.

I learned things about myself I had no idea about before. I see myself differently. No, not differently, but more clearly. And I met a fellow U2 fan! (I know you're reading this Isabel, stop stalking me)

My only regret is that I'm not going to have the opportunity to do this again.

Dan and I raced each other back from Olive Garden earlier today. Highly illegal, and fun nonetheless. I think I scared the guy entering I-35 when I cut across 4 lanes to get to the exit. And I KNOW I scared Emily who was riding with me. Cut people off at a left turn, did twice the speed limit through the neighbourhood while running stop signs.

Oh, and the Chicken Parmesan thing and Black Tie cake were both excellent.

No more posting for me for a week or so. I head off to LeaderShape tomorrow morning. Time to get my laundry and pack.

I swear I don't get my dad sometimes. He reminds me too much of me. Except he's a lot better at squash and table tennis. But anyhow, one day he's trying to convince me to get a base model SUV and now he's convincing me to buy the expensive Accord instead.

But anyhow, this time it's set in stone (I hope). I will be getting a Black 2005 Honda Accord EX V6 with about 8000 miles on it.

So I've realized that my last 7 odd posts have been... on the negative side. It's not like me but I've really been a bit under the weather. I've got the weekend to sort myself out and I intend to do so.

I pretty much spent all of today going around Austin test driving Honda Accords. I've basically narrowed it down to three possible options. Well, two, because the 2003 just didn't feel right when I test drove it, despite the fact that it had navigation and that cool black interior.

The two cars I'm considering are just about identical. They're both 2005 Honda Accord EX V6s, both black with tan interior and the same option set. The only real difference is that one has about 8300 miles on it while the other has 22000. The first one is going to be about $500 more than the second, and I might be able to negotiate the second down further. I'm just trying to decide which one I'm better off getting.

Either way, this time I should be able to finalize something by next week. For real.

And once that's done with, I fix all this other crap.

I was just filling out my peer advisor application, and I just realized something about myself....

I hate being dependant on people.

I don't like the fact that my parents are completely paying my way through college - not that I have a choice because I have very limited options to work in this country anyhow. I don't like that I have to rely on contacts to get an internship back home simply because half the recruiters here aren't interested in international students and the other half aren't interested in second year students. Oh, and I hate having to ask to be chauffered around simply because I have no other form of transport.

And in other news, it's only a month into the semester and I'm already having a slump. Just great. Screw having fun, I'm studying every weekend until I make As in my second round of tests. And I'm still sick. Too many things not going right all at once. Just marvellous.

Is no one capable of independent thought? Am I the only one who isn't outraged by this?

Call me biased because I've spent most of my life living in the UAE, and most of that time in Dubai, but all a sudden you have a media that equates it to a terrorist state - no, let me rephrase that - a media that equates all Arab states to terrorist states, and automatically implies that the UAE is somehow a terrorist state. And no, it's not just the media, it's the so called liberals.

I can accept it when you have concerns about a foreign government controlling operations (and that's all it is - operations - CBP, the FBI and I'm sure a number of other American agencies will have a presence there), you might as well be fair about it. The Chinese government in some form already controls operations at some ports, I believe on the west coast but I could be wrong, so where's the outrage over that?

It's pretty to cherry pick your facts and portray any country as a terrorist state. Here is a 'UAE concern' from Lou Dobbs... 'Does not recognize Israel'. Wow. Seriously, and I mean this in the lease offensive way possible, but sometimes Americans are just stupid. Israel isn't exactly well liked in the middle east. The UAE has every reason to not recognize it. How on earth does that have any bearing on the issue at hand?

It doesn't. It's just a play to create preconceived notions - set up a schema if you will - that eventually results in public opinion being biased against what is likely the most liberal country in the entire Arab world.

There are so many more important issues at hand. How is extraordinary rendition any less important than this? What about the NSA wiretaps (which by the way, your elected representatives in Congress are thinking about LEGALIZING)?

I think I'm sick. I'm sure waking up at 8 am yesterday on 2 hours of sleep and then going without eating until 11 pm didn't help, but I was feeling sick right from the beginning. I had better have owned that accounting test or else it just wouldn't have been worth it.

I'll probably end up buying a Honda Accord too. I'm not getting anything less than a V6 EX, and hopefully it won't be pre-2004. Already got my financing approved and insurance isn't going to take much doing. Hopefully tomorrow morning I'll be able to test drive one possible choice.

I need to take the easy way out. Graduate, go back to Bombay and claim my position as a director at Medley, drive a Rolls to work everyday and be a general all round asshole. That sounds like something I could do, and it certainly sounds more rewarding than working hard and trying to work my way up. And being nice.
